christmas traditions

I'm the first to admit that I am a bit holiday-obsessed.  Holiday-season is my favorite time of year.  Since I met Ted, this season has stretched to start as early as October 8th (our anniversary) instead of October 31st.  Anniversary, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day, my birthday, Easter.  Yep--half of the year, I'm pretty stoked on holidays, and I like it that way.  My favorite thing about holidays are the traditions.  Christmas has the most traditions, thus making it my #1 holiday.

Friends Christmas Brunch
Since 2009, my friends and I have had an annual brunch, hosted by me and Erin.  The past two years we've had it at Erin's lovely home she shares with her sister.  (Aren't we grown-up or what?)  After last year's latke success (I made them for the first time after being inspired by Ted's), we have kept the new tradition alive this year.  I was especially proud of my fancy spinach & feta latkes.  It is such a lovely time catching up with old friends.  I feel very lucky we can all get together during the holidays.

Christmas Eve
We go to mass at our church or my grandma's church, depending on the year.  This year we went to our little pink church (yeah, it's pink).  Afterwards we head over to my aunt's house to have a delicious meal, complete with homemade eggnog and a big rice-crispie wreath studded with M&M's.  We do a white elephant game with $10 gift cards, which is always funny.  This year I had to choose first, which is the worst number, but I ended up with Starbucks, so all is well.  When we open the presents, the kids all open one at the same time, and the adults open their secret santa gifts.  This year my relatives were super sweet and generous and gave me pounds for my upcoming London adventure.  I'm so grateful for their support in everything I do, especially when I'm the oddball in the family who went out-of-state for college and am now going abroad for five months.

Christmas Day
When my dad has to work on Christmas day, we wake up super early to open presents so he can leave for work around 7 or so.  Later in the day we go visit him at the fire station, where A Christmas Story is on loop.  Luckily, this year we had him all day!  Once he got home from work around 8, we opened presents and stockings.  Everyone got what they wanted.  Me--lots of stuff for London (including a new camera!), cute new additions to my room, and an REI giftcard (Portland has officially had an influence on me, because this was very exciting).  Kendal--One Direction tickets.  Enough said.  Izzy--a new bed.  My parents--they didn't get much for each other this year because they're coming to visit me in London, but they did love the personalized cutting board I gave them!

It was weird this year, because due to my stressful semester and not arriving home until two days before Christmas, I didn't make any of my gifts this year.  It's probably the first year I've done this.  However, I still had just as much fun finding the perfect gifts that showed my family how appreciative I am of their love and support.  I also enjoyed being able to support independent artists during the holiday season.

For Christmas brunch, we usually have quiche or blueberry french toast.  This year was the french toast with some chicken sausages.  We always have almond champagne and sparkling cider.  Throughout the day, I also have a good time breaking into the multiple homemade treats lying around from my mom's students.  There's also the tamales my mom orders from a local lady each year...

And then we watch Christmas movies in our pjs.  All day.  Throw in a nap or two, and you have the perfect Christmas day.
Second Christmas
The Hatos family never celebrates Christmas on the right day, and we are proud of it.  We divide all the gifts and then take turns opening our gifts.  Kendal and I alternate, because we are the kiddos.  I got so many lovely gifts, including more things to bring along to London, some traveling money, and cute accessories (like the cookie cutter necklace and red "London Calling" bangle seen above).  We end the epic gift-opening with find-the-pickle-ornament and an elf scavenger hunt!  Another hunt that happens is for the nativity scene's baby Jesus.  Every year, my dad hides it for my grandma to find.  Add in a delicious brunch spread out on matching Christmas Waechtersbach dishes complete with egg casserole, grits, cinnamon rolls, and pralines, and you have one magical day.  A funny thing happened this year was that my grandma bought this beautiful Christmas tree butter and when we went to go eat, it was slouching over, sadly melting in the Arizona sun streaming through the window.  That's a desert Christmas for you!

Other traditions we have during the holidays:  Christmas dress shopping (mine got good use at the theater Christmas party, Ted's and my Christmas date, The Nutcracker, Christmas brunch, and Christmas Eve) and The Nutcracker.

It was a beautiful Christmas.  I feel so fortunate to have such loving family and friends who make the holidays so special.  The holidays are just as magical as they were when I was a little one--maybe even more magical, because I get to start my own traditions with my friends and Ted.  Hope you had just as lovely a time and I wish you and yours a Happy New Year!

today i am thankful for... my parents

Today is their anniversary and that's a happy thing!  I was fortunate to be at their wedding 13 years ago as a tiny flower girl.  I am a lucky girl.  And yeah, they are young and sometimes more hip than me.  Can't wait to see them NEXT WEDNESDAY.  Like, wow.  Just need to finish a five-foot self-portrait, read a few plays, write an essay, and take a biology exam before then...  No biggie.  (Nervous laughter.)

This little lady is not so little anymore (okay, well, she's still pretty petite).  My sister turned 12 today and even though she gets annoyed when I try to cuddle and hug her, I love her so much.

photo diary: beaver creek, colorado wedding

I flew into Denver from Portland the day of my aunt's wedding. I had to explain to many people that I had just been at a Harry Potter convention, which was entertaining.  The wedding was two hours away in the ski town Avon (thanks for picking me up, dad!). After some much needed naptime in the hotel room (conventions are exhausting, people--I almost slept through my alarm that morning, but thankfully Ted woke me up in time to get to my flight), I fancied up in my favorite red dress and sequin heart.  I also used my super adorable clutch that looks like a folded vintage travel magazine and felt pretty darn cool.

The wedding was small, beautiful, and set against lots of trees and a creek.   It rained pretty hard right before the ceremony, which was doused in magical post-rain sunshine.  What could be better? My aunt looked lovely, and so did my mom, who was maid of honor!  I loved being part of such an intimate wedding.  Seriously, tiny forest-y weddings with lots of delicious appetizers, lasagna, and embarrassing dancing to annoy my little sister are the way to go.

home for the holidays part I

1)  Annual Christmas brunch with my friends. This year was really special because Erin hosted at her new house.  Everything was delicious!  Phoebe brought her famous scones, Domenico and I were at the stove serving up latkes and crepes, and Erin made a lovely coffee cake.  My favorite part was sitting around the Christmas tree and catching up.  I am so thankful for my friends at home.

2)  Going out to dinner and seeing the Nutcracker with my parents, grandma, and sister. My grandma takes us every year as a tradition, and you know how much I love traditions!  Of course my grandma always manages to find awesome themed gifts for me and my sister.  She's a pro.

3)  Late nights with Izzy as I Christmas craft.  She curled up into a ball at the head of my bed once I started loudly sewing...  She's too cute.  She's sleeping next to me as I type this!

4)  Max, our Elf on the Shelf, welcoming me home on Wednesday night.  He's a hoot.

Looking forward to even more holiday fun!  Hope you're enjoying some quality time with family and friends.

fall mix

Fall 2012 by Kaylie Hatos on Grooveshark

I know it's not officially Autumn yet, but it is in my heart.  All I want is pumpkin-flavored everything and holiday crafting.  Here are some tunes to jam to while you're daydreaming about warm pie, knit blankets, and multicolored leaves.

P.S.  That is a pumpkin spice latte made by my dad the morning before I left to come back to school.  Yep, he's that cool.  Also, for pumpkin recipes galore (plus crafty loveliness), go here.

lately...

The other afternoon I went to a new restaurant with my grandparents called Petite Maison.  True to its name, it was a cozy country house with wood everywhere and tiny chandeliers.  It was very charming and delicious.  I tried the Cassoulet Pissaladière (pizza), Poutine, Escargot de Bourgogne, the soup du jour (can't remember the name of it), and the Nutella Crème Brûlée.  My favorites were the Cassoulet pizza, the escargot, and the crème brûlée.  It was a lovely time, and we spent the rest of the afternoon browsing Fashion Square.  I even found boots that fit me/are age appropriate!  Score.

Lately:  writing in the traveling journal, sewing a dress (I'm farther now, but trying to be mysterious), sending off a care package for Ted, hanging out with Izzy every night in my room.

This week:  Knitting, reading Me Talk Pretty One Day, watching Downton Abbey, rewatching Gossip Girl, lunch & shopping date with my grandma Mimi (I got a dress that will go perfectly with my new boots), and catching up with friends before they go back to school (sadface).

Summer is winding down, and a pile of stuff in forming in the corner of my room (okay, so maybe this part isn't that unusual) of things to bring back to school.

outfit: favorite new trend

The other day my grandma and I got lunch and went shopping, which was lovely as always.  Since colorful jeans are everywhere lately, I've been looking out for a pair that would work for me.  Since I tend to wear bright colors, these teal ones fit the ticket.  Plus, this color reminds me of my grandma, who also loves it.

While my grandma always looks polished and stylish, I tend to be all over the place, hoping it makes sense to someone other than myself. I do admit that matching an outfit is very important, but I have a rather unorthodox way of doing it.  Sometimes I think I worry my grandma, because I'm always saying, "Oh, I will find something to go with that!"  So this one's for you!

When I see blue, I tend to want to put green or yellow with it, so I put on this yellow top and belted it (because I'm a belt addict).  I have a headband that is the same shade of blue with a pink flower, so I put that on too.  THEN I REMEMBERED I HAD THE PERFECT CLUTCH.  So I added it, accessorized, and ta-da!  A colorful, yet matched ensemble.

People always ask me, "How do you come up with your outfits?"  Well, here you go.  I'm just a crazy colorful mess that somehow comes together by some miracle.

sweet times & finds with friends

On Tuesday, some friends and I went to get shaved ice and do some thrifting.  I FOUND THE BEST NECKLACE EVER.  It was love at first sight.  I spotted it immediately in a sea of other necklaces and bracelets.  The rest is history.  Later I got to finally catch up with my friend who was in Europe for six weeks.  So happy to have her home!
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting up with Amy to browse the mall and get Sprinkles cupcakes.  It was a lovely time!  I even found velvet magenta flats at Banana FOR UNDER $7.  I love finding bargains like that on nice brands.  Plus, they are super comfy.  I can't wait to wear them this fall with bright tights.

When I got home, I found Izzy as seen above.  With blue in her hair.  This is not the first time this has happened, although the blue is new.  Apparently I can't leave my family alone for an afternoon without them causing mischief...

Happy Thursday!  Hope you have an exciting weekend ahead of you.

youngest old lady ever: the daily goings of a nineteen year old

Let me introduce you to THE BEST THING EVER -- AVOCADO FRIES!!!!!!!!

Make them ASAP if you love avocados and you love yourself.  I made them twice this past week.  I have to pace myself, you guys....  BUT THEY ARE SO GOOD.
Last Sunday I helped out my grandma with her new garden box she got for Mother's day.  My cousin Nate knew what he was doing, so he helped us out.  I need more gardening in my life!

I'm really enjoying being home and being able to spend quality time with my family, whether it means gardening, knitting, going out to eat, or watching The Bachelorette!  Love all of you lots!
This summer has been the summer of sewing.  I have been doing a ton of sewing at work, but I am just starting to get into some personal projects.  I bought some cheap fabric the other day and found a use for it that night.  The pattern I used was from 1968.  Of course, I made a few adjustments:  Smaller fit, two fabrics instead of one, and no ruffles around the top wrap.  I still need to make a proper belt for it--the one shown above is one I own, but works really well with the dress!

Next I am going to start working on this dress (version B) for Erin!  I can't find an exact year, but I'm assuming it's from the mid-to-late 50's.  We picked out an adorable grayish baby blue for the dress and a mustard yellow (aka Erin's signature color) pattern for the accents.  Can't wait to start this one!

Between all the cooking, gardening, sewing, and knitting, I am either an old lady with nothing else better to do or a very busy housewife.  Either way, I'm a happy Kaylie.
