I know it's not officially Autumn yet, but it is in my heart. All I want is pumpkin-flavored everything and holiday crafting. Here are some tunes to jam to while you're daydreaming about warm pie, knit blankets, and multicolored leaves.
P.S. That is a pumpkin spice latte made by my dad the morning before I left to come back to school. Yep, he's that cool. Also, for pumpkin recipes galore (plus crafty loveliness), go here.
I am really looking forward to Sucre's first album due out April 10th!
I just downloaded my free copy of Andrew Bird's new album "Break it Yourself" that came with my concert ticket and I am loving it! Can't wait to see him live this April.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is not only one of my favorite movies, but it is also one of my favorite soundtracks. It reminds me of Thanksgiving, so naturally I have started listening to it repeatedly since November arrived.
It is no secret that I am a sucker for anything associated with holidays. In fact, I go out of my way to associate things with holidays and seasons. Music in particular is the easiest to do this, which is one of the reasons why I love it so much. When it's Fall, I have my standards: Louis Armstrong (and any jazz), Frank Sinatra (although this is more of a gateway to Christmas music as it becomes closer to Christmastime), Sufjan's Age of Adz (I saw him last October when this album came out, so of course I associate it with Fall now), Simon & Garfunkel (especially my vinyl records at home, which I miss dearly), Vampire Weekend....to name a few. I also create playlists to listen to. In fact, I will share with you "Fall 2011 Part 1" here:
ONE WEEK UNTIL FALL BREAK. Exciting, right? Well...
I have two papers due before break. (Well, technically one, but I REALLY do NOT want to spend my Fall break thinking about Greek tragedies. Zeus no.)
This comes out to 10-11 pages in total. Welcome to college; I know.
Plus, I really want to see am going to see the One Acts (student written and directed plays that are, you guessed it! One act) on this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night because I've been doing weird things for them like making a loin cloth out of pillowcases and giving pink owl slippers snouts so they look like pigs. I started reading two of them, and literally can not wait to see all the costumes I've been seeing everyday come to life.
I'm not one to stress out, but this is quite the situation, people.
All I can do is listen to the newest Glee songs and dance a little at my desk as I try to get myself to write about Plato and Greek tragedies.
If I counted the number of times I've gotten goosebumps over the last couple of weeks, I would be in the bazillion digits. The things you do to me, Harry Potter. The things you put me through!
My excitement has somewhat turned into terror, which is heightened by the ever-looming prospect of growing up and dealing with college business. I feel like my wedding is this Thursday night at midnight! I am BEYOND excited. It's all I can think about. But then I start worrying about getting there on time (people already waiting in line: YOU ARE GIVING ME ANXIETY), getting enough seats for my friends, having enough time to finish the seventh book (I just have to, you know?), finding time to make more Butterbeer cupcakes, etc... It's all very silly, I realize this, but the end of the Harry Potter books and films signify a giant, enormous, bigger-than-Hagrid-and-Grawp-combined step in my life: Growing up (or trying to, at least), moving out, and going to college. And it's hitting me. Harder than a bludger. I'm as ready to go to college as any other incoming freshman, but emotionally at the moment, being in third grade reading Harry Potter for the first time sounds pretty appealing at the moment... I miss getting away with bringing a book out to dinner.
Venting aside, I happily wore my Harry & the Potters shirt today (I was a subtle Hermione on Sunday), jammed out to their first album (that I bought in fifth or sixth grade--not sure which) and A Very Potter Musical (for the 39482th time in the past few weeks, I'm sure of it) in the car, and purchased what seemed to be the last copy of the Harry Potter Empire at Barnes & Noble. I went in looking for the Harry Potter Entertainment Weekly, but didn't find it. It's all good, because Empire is beautiful! If I lived in the UK, I would definitely have a subscription.
And now I leave you with some wrock (that's wizard rock for you muggles out there) songs, because all I've been listening to lately is AVPM, Harry & the Potters, and wrock songs.
Of course, I have been rereading the entire series all summer (I'm almost done with Half Blood Prince at the moment). I've been tweeting quotes, taking pictures of funny things such as above (Sirius being serious), and getting lost in the wonderful world of Harry Potter.
In San Diego, I saw the trio.
And a very animated Harry.
I read non-stop during our trip (we just got home yesterday). I wasn't the only one reading Harry Potter. My sister's reading the first book and my dad reread the second part of Deathly Hallows in preparation for the movie. Twice. Twice before reading the Epilogue. He claims he's not in denial, but I think otherwise.
A man came up to me while I was reading to see what book I was reading and proceeded to say, "That one's the best one!" and share his plans to make an animated version of the seven books word-by-word. He went on to say that he loved the films, but was disappointed they left out so much in the larger novels. "Harry Potter and the Half-Told Story" is what he called the sixth movie. It made me happy that a fellow Harry Potter enthusiast reached out, especially when he was over twice my age.
My copy of Order of the Phoenix fell apart on the drive there, but that is okay because it made it lighter and of course I have the hardcover (that I distinctively remember getting at midnight at Barnes & Noble with my dad). Yep, already I've gone through two Goblet of Fires. My poor children will think I tried feeding my paperback editions to the Whomping Willow.
Today I watched two kiddos that are fellow Harry Potter lovers. Imagine my delight when the older one saw my Harry & the Potters CD as I was going for the requested Glee CD (Sidenote: I am happy to announce that I have at least these two referring to my car as the Glee-mobile due to the GLE on the back)! The backseat filled with giggles during each song. We even made a few music videos. Hooray! The Harry Potter fun didn't end when I got home... (Does it ever end? NO.)
Maggie tweeted about this song, so of course I looked it up and ended up crying for 5:51 minutes. Thankfully my dad magically appeared in my doorway with a present for me: Harry Potter silly bands. I love that guy.
All morning I read tweets from the HP cast about the London premiere. When I went to MuggleNet to check out everyone's fancy attire just now, I got smacked right in the face like an uncalled for Bat-Bogey hex (gross) with this video. Cue more tears.
Just a (Fluffy has three) heads up, this blog is officially HARRY POTTER 24/8! Yes, eight days a week, my friends.
My lovely friends Dahlya, Emily, Spencer, Rachel, and Rachel's sisters were happy to come along when I said Harry and the Potters were performing at the Phoenix Library this Friday. Hooray for friends who are Harry Potter enthusiasts! Well... Let's just say they probably wouldn't be my friends if they weren't.
As if seeing Harry and the Potters jam out to "Phoenix Tears" and "The Economics of the Wizarding World Don't Make Sense" wasn't awesome enough, I got to meet Amy from Amour et Chocolat! We've read each other's blogs for probably the past two years, and surprisingly had never crossed paths (although we had a secret code Harry Potter quote just in case we thought we saw each other). Although, meeting up at a Harry and the Potters concert is probably the coolest way to meet someone for the first time anyway. Hooray for blog friends turned real life friends!
The concert was one of the most fun I've ever been to! When you arrived, you got "sorted" by taking a pin out of a wizard hat. I got Hufflepuff. They also had a "Potion Bar" that they gave out beverages in different colors, but I never went over to grab one. The Harrys (yes, they both call themselves Harry and during the concert talk as if they are Harry) were the best part. They are so enthusiastic and you can tell how much fun they have playing these shows. They threw confetti into the audience, taught us motions to go with the songs, screamed, yelled, and made continuous Harry Potter references that were so hilarious and fun. The fact that this all went down in a library just makes it the best thing ever.
Of course I had to buy a t-shirt that has Hagrid on it with a shirt on that says "I <3 Hugs"... I am kind of in love with it. The best part is that the Harrys signed it! Joe wrote, "Believe in the power of LOVE (and magical babies)" and Paul wrote "Read with the volume on TEN!" How cool can you get? Not much cooler in my opinion.
What a magical event! VOLDEMORT CAN'T STOP THE ROCK!
...because making festive playlists is just too easy and fun. I searched for "Love" and picked out my favorite songs with the word "love" in the title. And that got me thinking...What are my favorite love songs of all time?
Top Ten Fourteen Twenty Favorite Love Songs (in no particular order)
*this clip is only the last few minutes. If you have an open mind, I greatly encourage you listen to the whole song. It's 25 minutes, but it's wonderful. (If you do listen to the whole thing, you'll probably either hate me forever or think I'm cooler than sliced bread...)
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Such a sweet song. This version is covered by She & Him. Side note: As if my love for Zooey wasn't embarressingly huge already, watch this (boy, can she really sing!) and read this (score-she really is as cool as I think she is!). Love her!
Baby, It's Cold Outside
Your quintessential fun, romantic Christmas song. I loved seeing Blaine and Kurt sing it together--too precious!
Last Christmas
What can get better than 80’s music and Christmastime? Not much, that’s what. Rachel and Finn’s version was so fun! (Uh oh, my Gleek is showing.)
Sister Winter
This is actually an original song by Sufjan Stevens--beautiful. Definitely worth a listen.
It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
Because when it is, I am so thrilled to sing along.
Why is it that homework makes me think of 32049832409 things other than the thing I'm SUPPOSED to be thinking about? Take just now, for instance. For some reason, Kate Nash pops up into my head and I put on "Pumpkin Soup" and I wonder, What the heck happened to Kate Nash?
So I googled her (Blasted Google is like the gateway drug to procrastination, I swear) and realize nothing has happened to her--I have just lost touch. But, thanks to a little frenemy called Procrastination, we have reunited. This makes me happy, because her music is so fun and empowering and say things like "I'll just read a book instead."
Full disclosure: Dahlya and I are obsessed with this man:
Can you blame us?
We just had a conversation that went a little like this:
Me: (after watching this) Hottieee. WHY IS HE TWICE OUR AGE?!?!
Dahlya: WHY ISN'T HE MARRIED TO US?!
Me: Life is cruel. At least I get to hear his voice every time my phone rings...because he calls me all the time.
Dahlya: I feel like I should rename everyone in my contacts "Sufjan" so that when I look at who's calling it will always be him.
Me: I don't know how I'm ever going to find someone to fill the hole Sufjan has left in my heart.
Dahlya: "Dear Sufjan, We both have unusual names, hippie parents, play the banjo, and own a yellow visor. Please marry me?" That is my proposal to him.
Me: Man, we are crazy fangirls. I think we have Stevens Fever.
Dahlya: YES! WE DO!
Me: But sooo much more acceptable.
Let's face it--we both frequently wear hats, can knit (I just googled "sufjan stevens knitting" to verify this and read that he taught knitting to the blind in his spare time. Are there no limits to the love I can have for this man?), and have brown hair... We are obviously made for eachother. Now please half your age and fall in love with me. Cool, thanks!
