lately...
The other afternoon I went to a new restaurant with my grandparents called Petite Maison. True to its name, it was a cozy country house with wood everywhere and tiny chandeliers. It was very charming and delicious. I tried the Cassoulet Pissaladière (pizza), Poutine, Escargot de Bourgogne, the soup du jour (can't remember the name of it), and the Nutella Crème Brûlée. My favorites were the Cassoulet pizza, the escargot, and the crème brûlée. It was a lovely time, and we spent the rest of the afternoon browsing Fashion Square. I even found boots that fit me/are age appropriate! Score.
Lately: writing in the traveling journal, sewing a dress (I'm farther now, but trying to be mysterious), sending off a care package for Ted, hanging out with Izzy every night in my room.
This week: Knitting, reading Me Talk Pretty One Day, watching Downton Abbey, rewatching Gossip Girl, lunch & shopping date with my grandma Mimi (I got a dress that will go perfectly with my new boots), and catching up with friends before they go back to school (sadface).
Summer is winding down, and a pile of stuff in forming in the corner of my room (okay, so maybe this part isn't that unusual) of things to bring back to school.

mental labor day
Labor Day was devoted to reading Lolita for English/getting distracted by my surroundings in the grass behind the Manor House. Correction: In the dirt under one of the trees behind the Manor House. Turns out I am literally allergic to the green stuff. My skin is so sensitive to the damp, intensely green blades of grass that I experience a speckled red reaction up and down my legs. Glamourous!
Before finding my cozy circle of dirt, I allowed myself to enjoy the sunshine. I laid down and closed my eyes and almost fell asleep, but the possibility of getting sunburnt in Port-freaking-land (what a laughingstock I would be in Arizona!) made me finally pry my eyes open and find a safe, itch-free, shady haven. Thankfully there was a huge tree that had some soil around it big enough to fit me and my sad, now grossly patterned legs.
In contrast to the gorgeous surroundings, the content of Lolita made me scrunch my face up in disapproval most of the afternoon. It is a truly detestable story, however beautifully written. It's quite the paradox! Reading Lolita has made me fear for my life and the life of every girl under five feet and of a petite nature. Just so you know the extent of my fright, I might point out that I am the same height (4'10) as Lolita. Eeek! Makes me want to dye my hair gray and pretend to be an old lady. But I digress...
I met a myriad of insects and creatures this afternoon. The bees in particular took a liking to me, of which the feeling was not mutual. I met a dragonfly perching on a few blades of grass, giant flies that I took as bees without my glasses on, and tiny ants and spiders that I didn't mind hanging out on the pages of my book. But mostly I made a ruckus out of sitting stone still humming (okay--squeaking, hollering, yelling) my discomfort when a bee buzzed around me. Note to self: Do not wear sweet-smelling perfume when studying outdoors. Lesson learned.
I am constantly surrounded by giant Christmas trees, and I can't help but want to decorate them with baubles and handmade ornaments. I am Kaylie, and I am continually dumbfounded by this green stuff.
moving here in 30 hours
This past couple of weeks have made me feel quite emotional, sentimental, and all those other "al"s associated with moving away from everything you've ever known ("Magical" being just another). I'm extremely excited, but slightly upset that I have decided to leave such a wonderful group of family and friends, even though I know I would be even more upset if I wasn't following my dream to live in a new city. And then I remind myself it's only for a portion of the year, and I will be back plenty. Plus, I need some good new stories to tell anyway!
Nevertheless, I have turned to extensive reading as a coping mechanism. After finishing The Help, I have started reading Bossypants, Tina Fey's autobiography, which is a great book for me right now because it is hilarious and reminds me things like, Successful People Take Chances! Successful People Moved From Their Hometowns To Pursue Their Careers! For some reason, this is wildly comforting. I am also resuming One Day, which I was openly cheating on The Help with before I finished it on Friday prior to seeing the movie (which I quite enjoyed along with approximately 25 other gray-haired ladies including Dahlya. They repeated lines as they hysterically laughed and clapped inspirationally).
Between goodbye(for now)s, the craziest finale of The Glee Project imaginable (Rachel and I went NUTS while Erin probably questioned why she was friends with such freaks), copious episodes of House Hunters International with my parents (my dad is addicted) and without, and Glee jam sessions/forced cuddle sessions with Izzy (I refuse to leave that poor dog alone), I am doing my best to remain as normal as possible in these last days (now hours, eek!) before my Big Adventure begins.
Until then! Xoxo

summer anecdote #3

Babysat some cool kiddos. We listened to the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack on loop. Let me tell you, I have been subjected to listen to several things on repeat in my many years of babysitting, but this was my favorite by far! It went perfectly with the unusually cloudy weather.
Decided to go to the library for the second time in a day. Why do I need to be reminded that such magic as a public library exists? Oh well; this happens every summer.
Drove home with the Spring Awakening soundtrack blasting. I felt so content! Don't you love moments like that?
Got home. Started reading A Streetcar Named Desire. Closed my eyes to picture the scene. Fell asleep for over an hour. THAT'S HOW I ROLL.
Woke up, made a tomato, mozzarella, and basil panini. I literally eat tomato, mozzarella, and basil in some form every day. Mostly sandwich. Sometimes pasta. Just add some carbs and I'm the happiest camper you ever saw. Don't worry about it...
Decided to make cupcakes while watching Coupling on Netflix Instant (think a British version of How I Met Your Mother minus the meeting your mother part and more inappropriate--It's pretty hilarious). We didn't have any milk, so I had to use soy milk. They turned out alright, so I'm thinking I should go all vegan next time? Okay!
Watched Pretty Little Liars/blogged with Melanie. I couldn't stop laughing hysterically during this part where the "yearbook staff" was working on the "yearbook" with REAL PHOTOGRAPHS. They were literally sorting through them saying things like, "Put that one over there with the other Drama Club pictures." What? Computers...exist. I lost it. And fell over.
Laughed just as much the second time I watched it later at Dahlya's with Erin, Melanie (again. We're cool), and the gang. To add to my binge of cupcake frosting and cupcakes, I ate two cake pops. I was so hyper... Whoops.
i ♥ french food
In exchange for my shopping expertise, my uncle Casey told me to pick out a book at Barnes & Noble. This is no easy feat, because if I could, I would buy every single book for my own, you know, personal two-story library I would have in this situation. I finally decided on The French Market, because I have this really serious disorder where I feel like I need to know how to bake and cook like a fabulous French woman. I know, it's a hard life, but someone's got to live it.next stop: Labor day weekend
Farewell To Summer from Starr Crow on Vimeo.
Three days off...Time to finish Eat Pray Love (Can someone please pay ME to travel across the world to write about it?), antique shop, and perhaps do some sewing?
Life is good.
I ♥ quotes
Back in the day, I used to spend a lot of free time (what's that, right?) on Brainy Quote reading quote after quote, being so darn thoughtful.
Luckily for me, it's Spring break, so I can revel in the Kaylie-ness I sometimes don't get the chance to humor because of, you know, real life. ( Because instinctually, I am a dreamer--not an AP student.)
So I've been catching up on my reading. Reading! For fun! It's such a lovely thing, really.
And I've been sewing every day, keeping true to my resolution. I even finished a dress today, thanks to the fabric my awesome friend Rachel gave to me for my birthday.
This all makes for a very happy Kaylie.
Anyway, I think this quote continues to be my favorite (I'm a sucker for the Transcendentalists):
Our life is frittered away by detail... simplify, simplify. -Henry David Thoreau

RIP J.D. Salinger
I could not tell you how many times I have read the first few pages of this book. Whenever I feel down and have no idea what to do with myself, I grab this book and start reading. In fact, the precise thing happened just last week--it never fails to calm me down. Thank you, J.D. Salinger. Your life was a blessing to humankind!
the Halloween festivities have begun...
+ Last night I got to make cupcakes, carve a pumpkin, and dress up in my costume for the yearbook party. Basically I want to be Velma for life.+ All I want to do is watch cheesy scary movies from the 50's. So far I have watched The Blob and Earth Vs. The Spider.
+ I have just begun reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, thanks to my awesome grandparents who are quite generous with the "treat" part of Halloween.
+ Kendal is being a black cat for Halloween, so I was asked to make her a black tutu. She's running around somewhere wearing it now.
+ I just ate a piece of my grandma's pumpkin bread with Nutella. Yum!
Happy Saturday! I hope you are enjoying the approach of Halloween as much as I am.
ridiculous
My new favorite thing to do is eat junk food while reading Harry Potter. Funny, but without fail this makes me feel 10 again.
And yet, the same feeling overcomes me as I eat sushi while reading Chamber of Secrets. (This happened only moments ago.) I'm pretty sure I have just spent numerous meals with books plastered to my face.
The scolding I used to get!

my love for 20's style deepens...

With school coming to a close, reading The Great Gatsby is not a realistic (aka sane) option for our English class. Instead, we are getting our taste of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel via a 1974 film adaption! Not quite the same, but it works. I can always read it on my own time this SUMMER, which is ever so NEAR of which I will have HOURS at end to read.
This is an especially good accommodation, as I am in love with the 20's. (It's where I get the whole short hair/short bangs thing, btw Mom...) It's so glamorous and I love the fact that short hair and "rising hemlines" were so risque at the time.
The glamour... I need flapper-esque dresses and sequined headbands pronto. I have one hat that does the trick, and a black velvet vintage shrug, but I need MORE.
Summer=time=antiquing=more hats=more glamour=happy Kaylie
But first, school. Ugh.
mark twain
Today I started reading Huckleberry Finn for my English class. I actually did read Tom Sawyer back in the sixth grade, but truthfully I literally only remember the part where he tricks the kid to paint the picket fence for him.Basically, I am hoping I can be at least a sliver as awesome as Mark Twain when my hair goes white... We watched video about him last week that was a riot. Apparently he took a liking to wearing a gown awarded to him by Oxford University--even to his daughter's wedding. I admire that, for some peculiar reason. (I'm sure his daughter wouldn't have agreed.)
favorites
Rarely do I find it necessary to have favorites, but somehow lately, I have accumulated a few. They are as follows:Favorite Movie: Wall-e Okay, this movie was the cutest thing I have ever experienced. After sushi last night, Katie, Dahlya, and I watched it and I almost instantly fell in love with the story. Again, not much of a kids movie, but a total Kaylie movie. Loved it!
Favorite Author: Jonathan Safran Foer The last book I read was Everything is Illuminated (also a great movie by the way) and the current book I am reading is Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. It is a sad truth that these are currently Foer's only novels, but he is young, so I am hopeful. See also: Current crush
persepolis

I suppose it takes a particular individual to enjoy a black and white animated film based on a graphic memoir. Fortunately, I am one of those individuals. I thought Persepolis was beautifully done both in book and in film.
Watchmen

Katie, Rylee, and I read the graphic novel and (eventually) got in to see the movie opening night. I was surprised how well they stayed true to the story (we're talking sometimes panel-by-panel), although they (understandably) changed the ending. Not for the faint at heart...
