Winter Formal turned out swell! I put in more dancing than the past dances I've attended all put together, probably because thanks to Melanie, I actually knew a considerable amount of the songs they played! So hooray for not being a complete failure at being a teenager.

Now, homework...Yuck.

today i am thankful for...Christmas dress shopping

My grandma and I have a tradition of going shopping for a Christmas dress each year.  Sometimes my grandpa even tags along like a good sport, as he did today.  Today marked our most successful mission yet--I found "the one" at our first stop.  I guess it wasn't so hard, considering our first stop was Anthro, but it was impressive nonetheless!

I also had an enlightening experience:  I walked into Barneys for the first time in my life (granted, we've only had one here for maybe a year or so).  I wasn't expecting anything but a snobby department store...what I found was heavenly.  It was minimal, but still cozy and creative.  I also saw many designers' clothing for the first time IN PERSON.  Isn't it odd that I felt so "in the know" about fashion when I had never seen or touched a Proenza Schouler or 3.1 Phillip Lim in person?  I don't know what hit me while I was in there, but I was in a daze the rest of the afternoon.  It also didn't help that a man there, dressed in a snazzy suit, stopped me and said, "I love your look; so Barneys!"  Uh, my life is complete?!

And then we went into Kate Spade, which embodies basically everything I believe in:  bright, playful colors, prints, polka dots, sparkles, with a retro sensibility.  Seriously, walk into Kate Spade and this is what I believe my brain consists of:  everything sparkly and colorful and nostalgic.

And don't even get me started about the Christmas decorations!!!!!

I swear I was zoned out into my happy place for at least an hour or two.

And a big thank you to my dear grandparents (and yes, I do know they will read this because they are that hip) for another memorable afternoon and another fantastic Christmas dress.  I love you guys.

don't we look snazzy?

Last night was Winter Formal. Dances have always been pleasantly awkward for me--I have watched way too many John Hughes movies not to appreciate high school for what it is--but this year it was actually a really nice situation! Nathan and I, along with our friends Erin and Domenico (who are going on 3 years in a couple of days--sheesh they make me feel old) went to this awesome Vietnamese restaurant for dinner. Yum! We definitely need to go back there sometime. Then we inspected all the Asian goodies at the Asian market next door. They must have thought we were pretty crazy to be grocery shopping in our fancy threads, but it's all good because now I know where to go if I ever need a two foot-long bag of seaweed. The dance itself is always a culture shock of songs I have never heard of and dance moves I really wish I didn't know about, but they played a couple of decent songs and I got to do the twist. So life is good.

my love for 20's style deepens...

With school coming to a close, reading The Great Gatsby is not a realistic (aka sane) option for our English class. Instead, we are getting our taste of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel via a 1974 film adaption! Not quite the same, but it works. I can always read it on my own time this SUMMER, which is ever so NEAR of which I will have HOURS at end to read.

This is an especially good accommodation, as I am in love with the 20's. (It's where I get the whole short hair/short bangs thing, btw Mom...) It's so glamorous and I love the fact that short hair and "rising hemlines" were so risque at the time.

The glamour... I need flapper-esque dresses and sequined headbands pronto. I have one hat that does the trick, and a black velvet vintage shrug, but I need MORE.

Summer=time=antiquing=more hats=more glamour=happy Kaylie

But first, school. Ugh.

bon voyage!

Sadies was tonight. Thank goodness. A reason to dress up.

Erin, Domenico, Caleb, and I met up with Rylee, Chase, and Phoebe at Joe's Farm Grill for dinner. It was lovely. Rylee noted that it basically felt like we were at our lunch table at school (JFG is lowkey and trendy with picnic tables and trees--best thing ever).

At the cabin-y cafe a few yards away, I ate my first sparkled cupcake. It was lemon and delicious. I guess I never considered the possibility of edible sparkles. This rocked the foundation of my world. Expect sparkly frosting for life.

The dance was very dance-esque: not that great, but memorable in the Sixteen Candles kind of way. If only they would have played 80's music. I would have danced a lot more in that case.

Speaking of sixteen candles! Today was Rylee's 16th birthday. We all remembered it. We even ambushed her with silly string to wake her up this morning and she may have slightly hated us for just a moment. Then we went for breakfast.

Productive day!

circus in the snow

Being the cool kid I am, I went to winter formal solo tonight...unless you count my huge yearbook Nikon as a date. (Hey, it was my ticket in!) Anyway, it turned out really cute. The theme was "Circus in the Snow" which of course entailed mock booths, tons of popcorn/animal crackers, and don't forget those silly wooden photo opts (Erin + Domenico, right). Everyone looked their spiffiest--I quite enjoyed people-watching and was especially entertained by the interesting dance moves I witnessed. Still working on the dancing in public thing though...

P.S. CUTEST COUPLE EVER SPOTTED. Western apparel involved. A bit envious!

Happy Holidays!

Timmy makes me look like an elf in comparison...
(+ thanks to my grandma Marcia, I now own my favorite dress in the world. I would literally wear it to my wedding if I could. I love it so much.)
