winning for life

Today was blissful!  I took the AP Gov test (which didn't make me want to cry), got to show off the beautiful yearbook to anxious students at lunch, help run the yearbook signing party, and go home to watch Glee prom (after antagonizingly having to listen to my mom and sister watch the second half from my room, but it was worth it).  I could not have planned a more wonderfully full day--except perhaps minus the AP.

I didn't float away, much to the dismay of everyone who has made that joke to me since I was -97 years old.  So, the story behind the shirt:  Every year we have an end of the year shirt for yearbook.  It is always humorous (last year it was "Wolf pack" themed.  The Hangover, anyone?).  This year, we took a cue from Charlie Sheen.  WINNING.

The back says, "Made with TIGER BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS."  Yeah, this makes us pretty awesome.  Not going to deny it.

AJ is a Lady Gaga balloon peacock.  (This isn't anything new.)

happy birthday to a wonderful, completely lovely human being

Thank you Audrey, for being the classy, independent woman you were.  I owe so much to you for being such a role model during the formidable years of my life.  I literally remember the moment I picked up Breakfast at Tiffany's and decided to spend my birthday Target gift card on it in the sixth grade.  I remember thinking, I've seen this lady before--on the wall of Nicole's bedroom!  When I was younger I would gaze up at the poster of Audrey with curiosity.  I remember thinking, What is that contraption she is holding?  (It was a cigarette holder, of course.) Why is she so dressed up?  (It was because she was elegant and glamorous, of course.)  Years later, she still instills a kind of awe in me.  I know that she has influenced me in ways I can't even imagine. 

To celebrate, I suggest popping in one of your favorite Audrey films (I chose Funny Face) and making yourself some pasta (I made penne with spinach, shredded mozzarella, walnuts, olive oil, basil, sea salt, and black pepper--pretty delicious if I do say so myself).

Google knows how to make a commercial, you guys.  They made one of my favorite commercials that literally made me cry the first time I saw it (in a theatre, no less!).  They have done it again with their new "It Gets Better" ad.

The fact that they aired it for the first time during Glee speaks volumes.  Because let's be honest here--Glee is not a conservative show, and it is often at the forefront of the LGBT community and the issues it faces.  To know that this kind of commercial reached this unique demographic tonight fills me with such joy, because everyone deserves to know that they are wonderful, beautiful human beings who deserve to live up to their full potential whatever their sexual preference.

I understand that there are people who disagree with this opinion and hold their own values very close to their hearts.  I respect that, as I would hope you to respect my own beliefs in return.  What I hope to remind you is that gay people are, well, people too.  Even if you can't support their lifestyle, you can support the human condition--the need to love and be loved.

Remember:  Acceptance.  Tolerance.  Compassion.  And this.

• Listening to way too much Warblers & Starship.  (Is that even possible? If it is, I've done it.)
• Being super cliche and studying at Starbucks three times in the past two weeks--OH YEAH!
• Having to explain to my English class that today is the anniversary of the defeat of Voldemort when my teacher asks me in the middle of class why I am wearing a pin that says "Team Harry."  EPIC NERD STATUS RIGHT UP IN HERE!

And that is all.
